The Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2014!

Last year was a phenomenally successful time for the horror genre, as 2013 saw the distribution of films such as Evil Dead, You're NextMama and The Purge. Rob Zombie returned with The Lords of Salem, Ben Wheatley blew our minds with A Field in England and Park Chan-wook directed the compelling Stoker. Anthology efforts came in the form of V/H/S - 2 and The ABC's of Death,  and American Mary sparked gender political debates left, right and centre. The Conjuring took precedence however, raking in a total domestic gross of $137, 400, 141, internationally frightening pundits and enforcing us to check our wardrobes nightly.

So, aside from the recent releases of Big Bad WolvesParanormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Devil's Due, what does this year have in store for us horror fanatics? Well, including a few honourable mentions and by no means an exhaustive list, here are some of the most anticipated horror films of 2014...

After successful screenings at various festivals in 2013, Almost Human has generated quite the buzz and will finally receive a wider release this Spring. It follows the story of Mark Fisher, a man whom mysteriously disappeared from his home. Two years later, a string of suspicious and grisly murders leads friend, Seth Hampton, to believe Fisher is back, although not entirely alone... From the trailer, it looks as if the film is a pastiche of our beloved classics from the 70s and 80s, combining all body-horror, wardrobe and chainsaw motifs, into a story line that has a striking resemblance to John Carpenter's The Thing. A nice bit of gore and a nostalgic fusion of generic tropes gets my vote any day.

Eli Roth's directorial efforts return this year with The Green Inferno. It follows a group of student activists who travel to the Amazon in an attempt to save a dying tribe. As luck would have it, they crash in a jungle and are taken hostage by a group of natives. Cannibal movies are not for everyone, and indeed nor is the work of Roth as he certainly divides opinion to say the least. Nevertheless, as a self-proclaimed homage to the cannibal films of the late 70s and early 80s, horror fans eagerly await this addition to the sub-genre. A wide-release date is unknown but rumours of September are circulating.

THE SACRAMENT

Speaking of Roth, he has produced Ti West's latest directorial effort, entitled The Sacrament. Due for a summer release this year, it follows a documentary crew's visit to an apparent idyllic commune, where the photographer attempts to reconnect with his sister. In a true, horrific fashion things do go a little awry and even though the film looks to be a slow-burner, it is by no means a light-hearted affair.

A British entry on the list now, as Hammer production The Quiet Ones is due for release in April. This supernatural horror follows the unorthodox teachings of a professor, who exploits his students and uses controversial methods to try and create a poltergeist. If The Woman in Black is anything to go by, in addition to this recently released trailer, we're in for some ghostly frights indeed.

HORNS

French director Alexandre Aja has an interesting fantasy-horror hybrid coming out this year. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Horns follows Ignatius Perrish, a young man who awakens with strange horns sprouting from his temples. In the aftermath of the mysterious death of his girlfriend, this anatomical addition grants the grieving man the power to divine people's innermost secrets, including the murder of his beloved. It's another interesting role for Radcliffe, edging further away from the Harry Potter canon, and into the darker depths of human nature. Having received mixed reviews after its initial release at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), we will have to wait until the very end of 2014 before seeing it ourselves.

Based on the 2001 novel, Beware the Night, Deliver Us from Evil follows New York officer Ralph Sarchie join forces with an unconventional priest, schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat a wave of demonic possessions that are terrorizing the city. Other than this basic plot outline and a few official photos, there has been very little press surrounding this films production. All we know is that it is set for a summer release, so stay tuned for further information.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE

A critically-applauded, Palme D'Or nominee enters the list now, as the acclaimed Jim Jarmusch brings us Only Lovers Left Alive. Due for a UK release on the 21st of February, this dark, vampiric love story follows Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as two vampires who have been in love for centuries. It's most definitely a character piece, driven by dialogue and dry humour rather than out-and-out spills and thrills. However positive reviews have been flooding in and anticipation surrounding this cool love story is rife, especially in our supernaturally savvy culture.

Not to be confused with Hellion, the new Aaron Paul drama, Hellions is the new directorial effort from Pontypool's Bruce McDonald. It follows a pregnant teenager who has to take on a trio of hostile trick or treaters and survive Halloween. No release date has been announced and once again, things are a little quiet on the publicity-front. However, Pontypool is admired by many horror fans and there is excitement to see what frights McDonald has in store for us next.

OCULUS

Due for release on the 11th of April, Oculus follows a woman's attempt to exonerate her brother, after he was wrongly convicted for murder. In order to clear his name, she goes on a mission to prove that the murder was in fact caused by a haunted, antique mirror. After the films' world premiere at the TIFF, critics have found it to be a little slow and perplexing but totally worth the agonising first hour, for the 'stressful, disorientating and hypnotising' finale that proceeds it. It may have a few flaws, but there is excitement in the air. After all, it's not often the end of a horror film is perceived as the highlight.

So there we have it - just a few of the most anticipated horror films for 2014. Before I sign off and leave you in an anticipatory (or disappointed) fever however, there are a couple of films receiving a wide release this year, that most definitely deserve an honourable mention...

THE RAID 2: BERANDAL

If you haven't see The Raid, stop reading this right now and go and watch it immediately. If you have seen it then I'm sure you'll be squealing with many others, in anticipation for the sequel. Set for release in March, it once again follows Rama and his undercover duties with the thugs of Jakarta, to bring down the syndicate and uncover corruption within the police force. Gareth Evans is proving himself to be a master of action and martial arts, blending the two with seamless choreography and fantastic cinematography. Every minute of his work packs a visceral punch and thank goodness we don't have to wait long before receiving another fantastic, cinematic beating. Check out the trailer below...

GODZILLA

We all know the story and we've all seen at least one reincarnation of this tyrannous monster. Well, prepare yourselves for another one... and I do not mean that pejoratively. Gareth Edwards, known by some for his directorial debut Monsters, is bringing us his take on Godzilla in May this year. It's hard not to get excited for this reboot, as fans were assured this would be a return to the monster's roots. Equally, after various press releases and a preview at Comic-Con, it appears Edwards is taking a more grounded and realistic approach - bearing in mind we are watching a gargantuan monster destroy a city. Presumably this means less Hollywood-Emmerich-1998-schlock and more sincere characterisation and sense of devastation. Who knows? But it looks undeniably impressive...

The 5 Most Anticipated Horror Shows of 2014!

(Spoilers ahead!)

With the likes of Dexter over and American Horror Story still firmly on our screens as we speak, what other macabre televisual delights are on our way? What are the five most anticipated horror shows of 2014?

True Blood

Love it or hate it, True Blood returns this year for its seventh and final season. Showrunner Brian Buckner has taken to teasing a few plot details here and there, concerning our most beloved supernaturals. His drip-feed of cast announcements and story details mean anticipation is rife, well... for the fans anyway. All will be revealed come the summer months.

Speaking of vampires, The Strain is set to hit our screens in July. Created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, FX have recently ordered a thirteen episode adaptation of the titular novel. It follows Dr. Goodweather and a team of survivors as they attempt to battle an ancient vampiric virus overpowering New York. Del Toro and vampires unite again? It's only right that we get a little excited.

Hannibal

Who's hungry? The second season of Hannibal returns February 28th  and as luck would have it, a trailer has recently been released. From the looks of things the incarceration of Dr. Will Graham is only the tip of this crazy-iceberg, or the starter for your evening meal if you're into your food puns. We're in for some heightened psychological horror, compelling imagery and more Mads Mikkelsen - delicious.

The mid-season break is almost over, and The Walking Dead will return on February 9th. After the show's devastating cliffhanger, we can expect to see Rick and the gang mourning the loss of their safe (ish) haven and beloved friends and family. How will they cope broken apart and on separate paths? What new challenges will they face? If the trailer is anything to go by, we're in for a pretty tumultuous treat.

Okay so this isn't strictly horror, although if you didn't find the penultimate episode of Season Three a little horrifying, you have no soul. Nevertheless, winter is coming! Along with the same old emotional strife, action, dragons and bloodshed that we all know and love. But enough talk, let's get all excited and remind ourselves of the trailer again...

A show of honorable mention is Penny Dreadful - an upcoming psychosexual horror series created for Showtime. It follows the origins of literary horror characters such as Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Grey and Count Dracula, set in Victorian London. With a fantastic cast and a premiere date of May 11th, it could well be our secret source of dark and twisted entertainment for 2014.

So there we have it, Wise Words...'s five most anticipated horror shows for 2014. Do you agree with the choices? Is there anything you would rather see on the list? Post a comment!

The 5 Most Anticipated Horror Games of 2014!

New year, new frights - so, let's kick things off with the five most anticipated horror games of 2014.

5) Asylum

Developed by Senscape, Asylum is a psychological horror set in Hanwell Mental Institute. The game is still in development and plot details remain under wraps however, players will be able to fully explore the spooky setting and will undoubtedly fall victim to some horrifying revelations. Sound familiar Outlast fans...?

Platforms; Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, iOS

4) Daylight

Developed by Zombie Studios and implementing Unreal Engine 4 technology, Daylight is yet another psychological horror due for release early 2014. You begin the game awakening in a strange, dilapidated hospital. Using only the light from your mobile phone to guide you, you must navigate the creepy halls, looking for answers. Once again this all sounds incredibly familiar, however there is a slight twist. The game features procedurally generated levels so that every game-play experience is different.

Platforms; Microsoft Windows, Playstation 4

3) Routine

Developed by Lunar Software, Routine looks to be a slightly refreshing take on the survival horror genre. Set in an abandoned moon base, the aim of the game is to survive and investigate the mysterious disappearance of the rest of your crew. The game features a procedurally generated  environment, laden with detail practically lifted from a 1980s science-fiction flick. In addition to this fantastic setting, Routine also boasts a Perma death system - no health packs, no multiple lives. Using the run-and-hide motif, this game has oft been described as Amnesia: The Dark Descent in space. It's a tagline that gets my vote as hey, it beats another hospital.

Platforms; Mac, PC

2) Among the Sleep

Moving away from space and hospitals into the comfort of our own homes, we have Among the Sleep, developed by Krillbite Studio. This is perhaps the most original horror game of 2014, as it places us in the mind of a two year-old. Capitalising on a child's imagination, we must navigate and explore a genuinely creepy and surreal environment, fearing whatever monster lurks around the corner.

Platforms; Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux Mac

1) The Evil Within

Claiming to reinvigorate the survival horror genre, the last entry on this list is The Evil Within - created by Tango Gameworks and directed by Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil fame. This game follows Detective Sebastian Castellanos as he must survive numerous, deadly forces (including the world's un-friendliest butcher) to get to the bottom of a gruesome mystery. Us pundits have been promised highly crafted environments and horrifying anxiety - from the looks of things, they deliver. However there is a lot of hype, will The Evil Within live up to it?

Platforms; Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One

So there are the five most anticipated horror games for 2014. Some, such as Daylight and Asylum, may fall a little flat in the wake of Outlast - arguably last year's most horrifying game. Other little contenders such as Among the Sleep could well be the bigger hit and terrify us all...

Out with the Old and in with the New!

Wise Words... has been a little quiet recently but fear not, the holiday season is over and now it's back to business. So what's on the agenda for 2014? Unfortunately I'm not referring to film and television here - although a blog post on this topic is inevitable. Instead I'm referring to a few changes that will be made to this very site.

Even though mince pies have been pretty high on the agenda of late, my thoughts have never strayed far from how to improve this little hobby of mine. First thing's first, it's time to stop the weekly television reviews. Instead I shall save all of my thoughts on our beloved serials until the very end, to produce some sort of review that encompasses the whole series. Why, you ask? Quite simply, it feels far more comprehensive that way. Of course in the mean time, you can always check my Twitter account for episodic mini-musings.

Similarly I'm going to stop the frequent round-ups of the latest news. Yet another remake?! We get it already. You can only write so many Wise Words... on Hollywood's poaching of beloved classics, before ultimately concluding with the same sentiment - remakes are not wise.

Those of you who have followed my blog will know that in all honesty, bits of news and weekly reviews have been my main output... so what's the focus from now on? Well it is out with the old and in with the new - gone are my weekly repeated sentiments showering Game of Thrones with praise, and farewell to internet-fueled speculation. Wise Words... will now focus entirely on film reviews, essays, retrospectives and articles. About bloody time too, as that was the original intention after all.

On that note, the first installment of this overdue resolution will be an exploration of Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise - an analytical love-letter to celebrate its Blu-ray release in February.

Following that... I have no idea. All suggestions are welcome however, so by all means - post a comment and tell me what you think. Until then, Happy New Year fellow film and television enthusiasts - here's to a cracking 2014.
