Neill Blomkamp (District 9) is treating us to a new sci-fi
epic, Elysium, this year. In conjunction with a recently released poster (above) comes
the films eagerly awaited first official trailer. You can catch it below...
The film is set in 2154, a time of heightened stratification
between the rich and poor. The rich, including Jodie Foster, live in a
beautiful community named Elysium in which there is no crime, poverty or war
and diseases like cancer are easily curable. This safe haven sanctuary orbits planet
earth – a now overcrowded dystopia full of poverty, famine and a troubled Matt Damon. In an attempt to right wrongs Matt’s character, Max, aims to infiltrate Elysium
in the ultimate heist.
The trailer boasts some very impressive special effects, action
a-plenty and an auteurist visual flare from Blomkamp. His previous work alludes
to a safe assumption that there will also be enough narrative substance to get
our teeth in to. Some disapproving calls were heard over Matt Damon’s casting
(Tom Hardy being a residual preference) but I fully believe he has the acting
chops to pull this role off. His star power combined with a stunning yet smart premise should make for an extremely pleasing blockbuster affair. Only time will tell... Elysium is released in the UK on September 20th,
2013.
